Being Here, a short film

Remember that time when you found the peace you were looking for out under a stretch of stars brighter than any back home? The time you felt more confident and true to yourself after a long, lung-busting trail run or a climb that pushed you past your limit? It seems we humans need wild places and wide, open spaces to get back in touch with what makes us tick.

Photographer and filmmaker Becca Skinner and I started talking about this during a four-day walk through The Maze in Canyonlands last spring. I’d written a script about the idea—how the desert seems to nourish our souls in such a deep way—and Becca was game to shoot some footage for a short film to go with it. We roped in some friends and asked my sister, Whitney Oliver, to edit it. At its premiere at the 5Point Film Festival this April, it received the People’s Choice award, and now we’re proud to release it out into the world. I hope you enjoy it, and that maybe it will urge you to visit to a wild place, for the health of your own wild heart.

A deep and sincere Thank You to our sponsors, Outdoor Research and Chaco Footwear, as well as the 5Point Film Festival!
